Maj Tyler R Braconi Obituary, Death; – The U.S. Marine Corps has identified the pilot who tragically lost his life in last week’s helicopter crash in the California desert as Maj. Tyler R. Braconi, a 35-year-old native of California and a distinguished Marine aviator stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Braconi perished on October 16 when his attack helicopter crashed during a training mission near Imperial Gables, a secluded area located approximately 40 miles from El Centro and 36 miles north of Yuma, Arizona.

The two-seat aircraft was engaged in support of the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course, a rigorous seven-week advanced training program often likened to the Navy’s Top Gun school.
A second pilot who was on board the helicopter survived the incident and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Braconi was a member of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, known as the “Gunfighters,” which is part of Marine Aircraft Group 39 within the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2012 and achieved the rank of major in 2022. Throughout his career, he completed a tour with another unit based at Camp Pendleton and served as an exchange pilot with the Australian Army, a role reserved for some of the Corps’ most skilled aviators.

His commendations included the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with four bronze stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

“We stand with the family of Maj. Tyler Braconi in grieving the profound loss of a beloved individual,” stated Lt. Col. Christopher Hart, commanding officer of HMLA-369, in a statement. “Our most cherished asset is our personnel, the individual Marine, and Tyler was among the finest. We grieve the loss of a ‘Gunfighter,’ a courageous aviator, and a leader who served our nation with humility, strength, and purpose. Our priority is to support Tyler’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.”
The crash occurred just days prior to Camp Pendleton hosting a 250th Marine Corps anniversary event attended by Vice President J.D. Vance, compounding the difficulties faced at the base during that week as officials.
