Johnny Andrew Collins Jr Obituary, Death; – The individual who was fatally shot by deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has been identified.
Kristine Strange, the senior deputy coroner for Greenville County, reported that Johnny Andrew Collins Jr., aged 51, from Greer, succumbed to injuries sustained during the shooting on May 29.
The incident took place around 12:11 p.m., while deputies from Greenville were assisting a unit from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending Collins, who had outstanding warrants, at 3412 Collins Road in Greer. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Collins brandished a weapon, which led deputies to discharge their firearms. Collins was declared dead at the scene at 12:22 p.m.
As per records from the Spartanburg County jail, Collins had escaped from home detention in October 2024 after being charged with attempted murder and kidnapping.
Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis stated that the five deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. This incident marks the fifth shooting involving deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office this year, as reported by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
