Dequevion Markuise Brown Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Kalamazoo County.
Dequevion Markuise Brown, 29, from Kalamazoo, was discovered unresponsive inside an apartment building after residents reported hearing a gunshot, according to a news release from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred at 2:36 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at Canterbury House Apartments in Oshtemo Township, located near the intersection of Drake Road and KL Avenue.
First responders and medical personnel made efforts to revive him, and he was transported to a hospital in Kalamazoo, where he was pronounced dead.
A suspect was detained near the scene, as reported by the police. This individual was interviewed and subsequently released after being ruled out as a potential suspect, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office expressed its condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this profoundly challenging time. The tragic and senseless loss has “deeply affected” the victim’s family and the entire community, as stated by the agency.
Residents congregated outside the crime scene while officers from various agencies conducted an investigation using a drone, a police dog, and equipment from the mobile crime lab. Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, and Western Michigan University Police responded, in addition to the sheriff’s office.
Kylene McCreary recounted that she was napping when she was awakened by the sound of a gunshot. Shortly thereafter, police arrived “screeching through,” she noted. She witnessed the man in distress after being shot.
“He looked at me, as if to ask for help,” she remarked. Rescue personnel attempted to save him before placing him in an ambulance, McCreary added. School buses arrived intermittently as officers worked in the vicinity, coinciding with the time children were being dropped off as school dismissed on Tuesday afternoon.

Residents talked about the shock of something happening so close to them, as investigators worked around the apartment community and a police drone lightly buzzed overhead. “They need to control guns better,” McCreary said. Police also confirmed a separate shooting that occurred in Kalamazoo in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 28.
