Brian Maloney III Obituary, Death; – On Friday, the San Diego Police Department disclosed the identities of the two individuals involved in a stabbing and shooting incident that occurred on Fiesta Island the previous Wednesday.
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at Fiesta Island at approximately 10:03 a.m. last Wednesday, where they discovered two men along the shore of the islet. One individual had sustained stab wounds, while the other had been shot, according to police reports.
The individual who was stabbed has been identified as Victor Bocaya, an off-duty officer with 25 years of service in the San Diego Community College District Police Department. The man who was shot has been identified as 41-year-old Brian Maloney III, who was pronounced dead at the scene, as stated by authorities.
According to the San Diego Police Department, Bocaya had gone to Fiesta Island to walk his dogs. Maloney was located near his van, approximately 75 feet from Bocaya’s vehicle. Before Bocaya could exit his vehicle with his dogs, Maloney allegedly began shouting at him and approached him, as reported by the police. The incident transpired on the sand between the water and the roadway on Fiesta Island, according to police accounts.
When Bocaya displayed his badge, identified himself as a police officer, and attempted to call for assistance using his cell phone, Maloney reportedly attacked him with a knife. It was at this point that Bocaya drew his personal firearm and shot Maloney once.
Despite being off-duty, the San Diego Police Department indicated that this case is being treated as an officer-involved shooting, given that Bocaya had identified himself as a police officer and displayed his badge.
Following the completion of the investigation by the Homicide Unit, the findings will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to assess whether Bocaya may face any criminal charges for his actions, as stated by the SDPD.
