Yeriel Rodriguez Mercado Obituary, Death; – The mother of a 19-year-old former athlete from Tomball Memorial High School is appealing to both law enforcement and the community for assistance in identifying the driver responsible for her son’s death in a hit-and-run incident.
As reported by the Houston Police, Yeriel Rodriguez Mercado was traveling at a high speed on Highway 290 during the Labor Day weekend when he collided with another vehicle, resulting in him being ejected from his motorcycle.
While attempting to regain his footing, authorities indicate that he was subsequently struck by a second vehicle. The driver of this second vehicle did not stop and remains unidentified. Police suspect that the vehicle involved was a white Jeep.
In the obituary for Rodriguez Mercado, his family expressed, “Yeriel was an extraordinary individual with a heart as expansive as his character. His spontaneous nature often led to unplanned adventures and acts of generosity, creating enduring memories for all who encountered him.” They further noted his “enthusiasm for life” and “contagious smile.”
His mother, Isvia Mercado Cosme, characterized him as joyful, gifted, and intelligent. She mentioned his passion for sports, particularly his talents in football and boxing. “Justice is essential,” she stated. She continued, “I have faith. I believe God is watching over us. I understand that nothing can bring my child back.”
ABC13 reported that out of the 26,880 hit-and-run incidents managed by the Houston Police Department last year, only 310 were resolved. “That is not an animal; that is a human being,” Cosme remarked. “We all make mistakes, but it is crucial to address this situation.” She is urging the driver to come forward.
