Authorities said a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette driven by William Robinson was traveling east on I-40 near mile marker 45 when the car experienced a possible mechanical failure and stopped in the center lane.

A Ford Escape, also traveling eastbound, was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the Corvette, police said. The collision caused the Corvette to catch on fire. Robinson died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The wreck closed I-40 east for three hours while crews responded to the scene. Police said the investigation into the wreck is ongoing. Once complete, the department will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office.
