Nicolas Quaranta Obituary, Death; – An armed individual who was shot and killed by Sterling Heights police on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Nicolas Quaranta, 54, a resident of the city, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the shooting incident that occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a condominium located in the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive, near the intersection of 19 Mile and Dequindre roads, as reported by the police.
Quaranta was described as being ‘possibly suicidal’ and seemed to be undergoing a mental health crisis, according to police statements. Trained negotiators engaged with the man, who was armed with a handgun, for more than an hour. Quaranta subsequently pointed the firearm at the officers, prompting them to return fire, as stated by the police.
Emergency personnel who were on standby provided treatment to the man; however, he succumbed to his gunshot injuries, according to police reports.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office indicated that a media briefing will be conducted to share the findings of the investigation once it has concluded.
