Kevin Rodriguez Zavala Obituary, Death; – The passing of a man discovered unresponsive on Universal’s Epic Universe roller coaster has been classified as accidental.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) confirmed on Thursday that 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala sustained multiple blunt force injuries while experiencing the Stardust Racers, a high-velocity dual-track coaster designed to replicate a racing experience. Zavala’s girlfriend informed deputies that she believed he was secured after several attempts; however, moments into the ride, he was propelled forward and struck his head. He was swiftly transported to a hospital where he was later declared deceased.
Investigators have stated that no criminal activities took place.
This tragic event occurred just months prior to the scheduled opening of Epic Universe, Universal Orlando’s most extensive expansion, on May 22. Stardust Racers, situated in Celestial Park, has garnered attention beyond Zavala’s demise. Attorneys representing other patrons assert that riders have reported injuries, including spinal damage, since the coaster commenced limited previews. One attorney mentioned that several clients have suffered severe back injuries, prompting concerns regarding whether the ride’s restraint system and design comply with safety regulations.
The incident has ignited renewed examination of ride safety protocols as Universal gears up for its grand opening. Industry specialists observe that high-speed coasters typically undergo thorough testing; however, accidents—even infrequent ones—can affect public perception and regulatory scrutiny.
