Justin Lowery Obituary, Death; – Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken has identified the individual who was shot and killed following a standoff with sheriff’s deputies on August 27.
Justin Lowery, aged 30, succumbed to his injuries after being shot by a deputy from the Florence County sheriff’s office, as stated by von Lutcken in an email release.
On August 27, deputies responded to a report indicating that shots had been fired at Florence County EMS on Anderson Field Road. Following a standoff and failed negotiations, a sheriff’s deputy discharged their weapon, resulting in Lowery being shot, as previously reported by The Post and Courier.
According to von Lutcken, Lowery approached the deputies in a menacing manner while armed and discharged his firearm at his mother. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was declared deceased.
An autopsy is set to take place at the Medical University of South Carolina. The shooting is currently under investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division.
In an unrelated incident on August 27, a deputy from the Florence County sheriff’s office was involved in a vehicular collision at the intersection of Pamplico Highway and Willow Creek Road, which resulted in the death of 74-year-old Lula A. Webber.
This incident follows closely on the heels of two lawsuits filed against the sheriff’s office after one of its deputies fatally shot a suspect while his police dog attacked a bystander in 2024, an event that Sheriff T.J. Joye has described as “awful.”
Deputy Treyvon Sellers faces charges of voluntary manslaughter, misconduct in office, and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature following an investigation conducted by the State Law Enforcement Division.
