Joan Meyer Death News – The Lincoln Police Department reports that an 88-year-old woman from Avoca, Nebraska, has died from injuries sustained in a pedestrian accident last Saturday morning near 14th and G Streets. Joan Meyer passed away early Wednesday morning, leaving family, friends, and the community mourning her loss.

Erika Thomas, Public Information Manager for LPD, expressed sympathy for Meyer’s loved ones: “Our thoughts go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.” She added that the crash, initially thought to result in non-life-threatening injuries, is now being investigated as a Motor Vehicle Homicide.

According to the preliminary investigation, Meyer was on her way to participate in the Walk For Life event when the incident occurred. Michael Hughes, 47, of Denton, was driving a red 2010 Chevy Silverado pickup truck south on 14th Street. As he approached the intersection with G Street, Hughes stopped at a stop sign before attempting a left turn. Unfortunately, Meyer, who was crossing in the designated crosswalk, was struck by the vehicle.

Officers nearby responded immediately, providing first aid on the scene before Meyer was transported to the hospital with serious head injuries. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she later passed away.

LPD reports that Hughes told officers the sun was in his eyes at the time, which prevented him from seeing Meyer while turning. He was initially cited for failure to yield the right of way. Police emphasized that with Meyer’s passing, charges could be updated as part of the ongoing investigation.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety, awareness, and careful driving—especially near crosswalks and intersections. Lincoln police are urging both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and cautious to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The community is encouraged to support Meyer’s family during this heartbreaking time. Local resources are available for those impacted by the incident, and the Lincoln Police Department asks anyone with additional information about the crash to come forward.

Events like the Walk For Life are meant to celebrate community and life, and this tragedy has touched many residents deeply. Officers remind the public that safe driving, attentiveness at intersections, and respecting crosswalks are crucial for protecting the lives of pedestrians, particularly older adults who may be more vulnerable.

As Lincoln continues to grieve this loss, authorities are committed to conducting a thorough investigation, keeping transparency a priority, and ensuring the community stays informed. Thoughts remain with Joan Meyer’s family, friends, and all who knew her, as the city mourns a respected and cherished member of its community.
