The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding a double shooting that occurred on Wednesday evening, February 4, 2026. The incident took place at approximately 7:49 p.m. on Big Springs-Mountville Road, in the area between Greenville Road and John Burks Road. Emergency responders, including Troup County AMR and the Troup County Fire Department, quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
Tragically, one man, 54-year-old Jeffery Scott, lost his life in the incident. A second individual, 50-year-old Walter Keene, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 32-year-old Zachary Thompkins. Deputies located him at an address on Greenville Road, and he was taken into custody without incident. Preliminary investigation indicates that Thompkins went to the location to confront one of the victims regarding a prior disagreement. During the confrontation, a firearm was discharged, resulting in injuries to both victims before the suspect left the scene.
Thompkins has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
