Jaliyah Butler Obituary, Death; – Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle has disclosed the identity of the woman who was killed during one of two shootings on the campus of S.C. State University on the evening of October 4.

Jaliyah Butler, a 19-year-old from Saluda, was declared deceased at MUSC Health Orangeburg, according to a statement from the coroner’s office.

“My heart goes out to all the victims of this tragic incident and to their families, the South Carolina State University community, and the Orangeburg County residents,” Fogle expressed. “Let us continue to pray for these individuals and our county as we strive to heal and recover from this devastating occurrence.”

An unnamed man was also hospitalized following the two shootings, which authorities believe to be unrelated, as stated on October 5. None of the victims were students at S.C. State.

Butler was shot fatally near the Hugine Suites dormitory just hours after the university’s homecoming football game against Savannah State University, which was part of the week-long homecoming festivities.

The second shooting took place approximately a quarter-mile from the residence hall, at 117 Jenerette Street. On October 5, the State Law Enforcement Division charged Matthew Daniel McCoy, 18, with pointing and presenting a firearm at an individual and carrying a weapon on school premises.

Arrest warrant affidavits indicate that he discharged a Glock handgun twice at another man. University President Alexander Conyers noted that aside from being on campus, he had no other affiliation with the institution.

A day following the shootings, which are under investigation by SLED, officials from S.C. State underscored that campus security remains a primary concern. Police were able to respond to the shooting within minutes, Gerald Hubbard Smalls, who oversees campus police, stated during an October 5 virtual town hall.
