Brian Barrett Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot over the weekend in northeast Columbia.
Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford reported that 30-year-old Brian Barrett succumbed to his injuries late Saturday following the incident on the 800 block of Polo Road.
The alleged shooter, 44-year-old Charles McCants, was apprehended on Sunday. He faces charges of murder along with weapon-related offenses, as stated by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
The RCSD indicated that McCants and Barrett were involved in a dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in McCants shooting Barrett multiple times before fleeing the location.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered Barrett unresponsive with gunshot wounds to his upper chest. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the RCSD, McCants was subsequently located in Hartsville and taken into custody by local law enforcement. He was later returned to Richland County and processed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
McCants is set to appear for a bond hearing on Monday afternoon.
