Blake Unger Obituary, Death; – Otter Tail County deputies report that a man from New York Mills, Izak Schermerhorn, has been charged with the death of his passenger in a rollover incident, having admitted to consuming alcohol and intentionally driving recklessly.
Eighteen-year-old Schermerhorn was taken into custody late Tuesday night in connection with the death of Blake Unger, also 18, from New York Mills.
Deputies responded to a call regarding a rollover accident near Wadena. Upon arrival, they met with emergency personnel who informed them that an individual, later identified as Unger, was trapped beneath the pickup truck and had already succumbed to his injuries. Unger had recently completed his studies at New York Mills High School.
According to court documents, Schermerhorn informed investigators that he had refrained from alcohol for the past year but chose to celebrate his graduation by drinking. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Otter Tail County Detention Facility located in Fergus Falls.
Schermerhorn faces charges of criminal vehicular homicide, negligent driving, driving under the influence, and negligent driving while under the influence. He was subsequently released from custody after posting bail set at $1,000.
