Abubacarr Darboe Obituary, Death; – The Madison community is grieving the loss of a promising young man whose aspirations were tragically halted just months prior to his college graduation.

Abubacarr Darboe, 22, affectionately referred to as “Buba” by family and friends, was fatally shot on Saturday night near Portage Road while he was visiting Madison during a break from his business studies at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. He was set to graduate in May.

Madison police have identified two individuals of interest in the investigation, although no charges have been filed as of the most recent update. The inquiry is still ongoing.

Samba Baldeh, a former state representative and family friend, observed Darboe’s upbringing in Madison’s tight-knit community. Baldeh characterized Darboe as an outstanding first-generation American who surmounted considerable obstacles.

“We are a community here that is, in many instances, very close,” Baldeh remarked.

Originally from the Gambia, Darboe relocated to America, where he consistently excelled both academically and athletically. He graduated from Madison East High School and was recognized in the community for his soccer prowess.

“Immigrating presents challenges. Therefore, to arrive here, manage school, not only succeed academically but also engage in extracurricular activities, is commendable. As you noted, he was a talented athlete, particularly in soccer. Many people know him for that. He not only accomplished these feats but also contributed to the community,” Baldeh stated.

Darboe had returned to Madison for the holidays and was visiting with two brothers when the shooting took place. According to Baldeh, Darboe had been conversing with his mother until approximately 7:45 p.m. before heading to see his siblings.

“He came for the holidays just three days before he was scheduled to leave,” Baldeh explained. “He mentioned that he was chatting with his mom until around 7:45 p.m. I believe that is when he intended to visit his two older siblings who were in the car with him. So, about an hour or two later, his mother received a call informing her of the incident.”
