Ellie Young Obituary, death; – The Halls community united on Tuesday evening to honor the memory of Ellie Young, a 22-year-old medical student whose life was tragically cut short when she was shot and killed by a former boyfriend on Sunday afternoon.
The vigil, organized by Ellie’s former teachers and her sister-in-law, took place at the tennis court in Critchfield Park and concluded around 7:30 p.m. that evening. The court was filled with family and friends standing together in solidarity.
Newschain spoke with the organizers, who were visibly emotional as they recounted cherished memories of Ellie. They reflected on her growth since graduating from Halls High School. Ellie attended the University of Tennessee at Martin as an honors student and was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
Following her graduation, she was accepted into the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where she was in her first year of medical studies. Her friends noted her commitment to serving others, expressing that she was on the path to becoming an exceptional surgeon. They described her as a beacon of positivity.
“She was incredibly motivated,” remarked Cindy Ream, a former teacher of Ellie. “It was evident from a young age that she aspired to be a doctor. She possessed a remarkable determination.” “She was a radiant presence in everyone’s life, from elementary school through college. That is how we will remember her,” added Richard Dawson, another former teacher.
When asked why the vigil was held at a tennis court, the organizers explained that Ellie was a talented tennis player who had a deep love for the sport. They aimed to choose a location that brought her the greatest joy.
