Diamante Treveon Neal Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified the individual suspected of fatally shooting a man within Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News over the weekend.
Gary Carlton Moore III faces charges of second-degree murder, the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling, and felony carrying a concealed weapon (second offense).
Newport News police arrived at the location shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday, where they discovered a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound inside one of the mall’s retail establishments. The victim, recognized as 26-year-old Diamante Tre’veon Neal from Newport News, subsequently succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Authorities indicated that the shooting seems to be an isolated incident, resulting from a dispute between the suspect and the victim.
“We did not want the public to perceive this as a mass shooting or a situation involving multiple victims within the mall,” stated Police Chief Steve Drew during a news conference on Saturday. “These were two individuals within a smaller store in the mall. It appears they exchanged words near the food court area, and then they encountered each other again inside the mall, where the verbal altercation escalated further.”
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
