Trevor Merritt,Nicholas Williams Obituary, Death; – A woman sought in relation to a crash that resulted in the deaths of three E.E. Smith High School students nearly two weeks ago has surrendered to authorities, as reported by the Fayetteville Police Department in a news release on Wednesday.
According to police, 19-year-old Destini Rhinada Genwright voluntarily turned herself in on Tuesday after officers had been in communication with her and urged her to do so. She faces charges of willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and an insurance violation.
The incident occurred on the 2700 block of Rosehill Road, near the intersection with Walstone Road, on October 8, shortly before 7 p.m. Police reported that a 2024 Honda Civic veered off the road and collided with a tree, resulting in the fatalities of passengers Jai’Hyon Lamont Elliot, Trevor Merritt, and Nicholas Williams. All three were students at E.E. Smith High School and members of the football team.
The driver has been identified as Genwright’s sister, 21-year-old Dymond Monroe from Fayetteville. She was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill with serious injuries.
After consulting with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, investigators charged Monroe with three counts of involuntary manslaughter, in addition to charges of willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and an insurance violation. As of Tuesday afternoon, Monroe remains hospitalized, according to the police department.
Authorities stated that Genwright was operating a different vehicle on Rosehill Road at the time of the crash.
