TaShawn Davis Obituary, Death; – Authorities have disclosed the identity of an 18-year-old male who was fatally shot during an encounter with a Columbus police officer in the University District early on Sunday morning.

Sgt. James Fuqua reported that officers on patrol near North High Street and 9th Avenue were alerted around 3:30 a.m. regarding a robbery that had just taken place.

While searching for the robbery suspect, Fuqua mentioned that one of the officers was approached by two individuals who claimed that a man had confronted them while brandishing a firearm. They provided the officer with a description of the suspect, and shortly thereafter, the officer spotted an individual who fit that description.

According to police, the description given by the witnesses corresponded with that of the suspect involved in the earlier reported robbery.

Fuqua stated that the officer promptly attempted to detain the individual, instructing him to raise his hands, but the suspect fled, resulting in a pursuit.

During the chase, Fuqua indicated that the officer communicated over the radio that the suspect was armed. Soon after, he reported that the officer discharged their weapon multiple times, striking the suspect.

The suspect, identified as Ta’Shawn Davis, was taken to Grant Medical Center, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Fuqua noted that there was no evidence suggesting that Davis fired his weapon, although a firearm was recovered from the scene.

No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

The police have withheld the name of the officer involved in accordance with Marsy’s Law, but they confirmed that the officer has been with the department for 14 years.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
