Rigo Reyna-Sanchez Obituary, Death; – The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has identified the victim of a tragic event along Highway 36 as 58-year-old Rigo Reyna-Sanchez, who previously served as a sergeant with the Eureka Police Department.
According to HCSO, a landslide took place at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, east of Swimmer’s Delight, resulting in the death of Reyna-Sanchez. As reported by Caltrans, he was engaged in work for a local contractor at that time.
The Sheriff’s office released a statement expressing condolences to his family and loved ones, describing it as a “heartbreaking loss.” Caltrans also issued a statement, indicating that the landslide remains active and that Route 36 continues to be closed.
Caltrans remarked, “The incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by highway workers. This tragic event, occurring shortly after our workers’ memorial service, highlights the risks associated with our work on state highways.”
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident, and there is no update on when the road will be reopened.
Reyna-Sanchez is survived by his wife and children.
