Earlier that day, police had responded to a call from a woman who reported that a man she had previously been involved with had assaulted her at a pawn shop, as reported by KVEO. She indicated that the man pursued her wielding a hammer, according to information provided to KRGV by the police. After the assault, law enforcement escorted her to her home, as reported by the outlet.
However, the man was already present at her residence and shot her, police reported, as per KVEO. Officers returned to check on the woman shortly after dropping her off, according to KRGV, and encountered the man. He discharged a firearm at the police, prompting an officer to return fire, striking him, as stated by the department. The police identified the woman as 23-year-old Nora Zuniga and the man as 35-year-old Bernardo Pedraza.
Both individuals were in critical condition but subsequently succumbed to their injuries, according to police reports. Brownsville is located approximately 280 miles south of San Antonio.
