Mayor George Garner Obituary, Death; – A mayor in South Carolina tragically lost his life in a vehicular accident while being pursued by law enforcement, just days after the complete resignation of his town’s police department.
Mayor George Garner, who had recently secured reelection, succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash that occurred at 2:40 p.m. on Highway 34. Coroner Todd Hardee disclosed via a Facebook post that a deputy from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office was trailing Garner at the time of the incident.
“The pursuit was not connected to any criminal activity,” Hardee stated. “It was conducted in an effort to ensure the safety of Mr. Garner.” At the time of the accident, Garner was operating a Chevrolet Tahoe heading west when he crossed the center line and collided with a tractor-trailer.
Both Garner and the driver of the tractor-trailer were transported to a hospital for medical attention; however, Garner ultimately passed away due to his injuries. He was 49 years old. The coroner indicated that a determination regarding the manner of Garner’s death will be made in the forthcoming days.
“Please keep this family, as well as the residents of our neighboring Marlboro County, in your thoughts and prayers,” Hardee urged. This unfortunate news follows the announcement made to residents last week regarding the absence of a police force in the Marlboro County town, following the resignation of the entire police department.
