Mason Santiago,Tyler Koscinski Obituary, Death; – Two former students and varsity athletes from New Lenox have been confirmed as the individuals who lost their lives in a collision on I-80 West early Sunday morning in Tinley Park.
Mason Santiago, aged 19, and Tyler Koscinski, aged 20, perished in an accident involving a semi-truck on I-80 West, as reported by the Will County Coroner’s Office. Both were declared deceased at 8:20 a.m. Santiago was an alumnus of Providence Catholic High School, while Koscinski graduated from Lincoln-Way West High School.
Santiago played as a linebacker and defensive back for the Celtics, leading the team to the Class 4A title game in 2022, where they finished as runners-up.
“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of Mason Santiago, a 2023 graduate and an exceptional young man whose presence illuminated our school community,” stated Father John Merkelis, OSA, President of Providence Catholic. “The loss of a young life compels us all to reflect on the fragility of existence. This morning, the Providence Catholic community convened in prayer and will continue to honor his family during Mass. His passing represents a significant loss, and our thoughts, prayers, and support are extended to his family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.”
Santiago continued his athletic career as a linebacker at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, where he was a sophomore majoring in sports communications. “The SXU Cougar football family is in shock and utterly devastated by the loss of Mason Santiago,” remarked Coach Mike Feminis.
“It is simply unfathomable to comprehend such a tragedy. He was a wonderful young man, well-regarded by both his teammates and coaches. Our heartfelt condolences are with Mason’s family and loved ones.” University President Keith Elder communicated this news to the student body.
“It is with deep sorrow that I convey the unexpected passing of SXU student-athlete Mason Santiago,” Elder wrote. “Mason was a sophomore pursuing a degree in sports communication and a valued member of the SXU football team. The close-knit community at Saint Xavier is here to support students during this difficult time.”
