Mariangela Duenas,Amarani Amaya Gomez Obituary, Death; – A man was apprehended for DUI manslaughter following the deaths of two individuals in a car accident on Friday, according to authorities.
As reported by the Roanoke Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene of a car crash involving entrapment at the intersection of Cove Road and Dansbury Drive NW at approximately 11:39 p.m.
When the officers arrived, they discovered a red Jeep Wrangler that had collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cruze.
According to police, the driver of the Jeep was heading south on Cove Road while the Chevrolet was traveling north. The Jeep crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, prompting the Chevrolet to take evasive measures in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision. Simultaneously, the Jeep switched lanes, returning to the correct side of the road, which resulted in the two vehicles colliding.
The Chevrolet Cruze was carrying four passengers.
Authorities report that the front passenger, later identified as 19-year-old Amarani Amaya Gomez from Roanoke, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the rear right passenger, identified as 18-year-old Mariangela Duenas, also from Roanoke, was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Additionally, police stated that the rear driver-side passenger, a 17-year-old male, is in critical condition, and the driver, a 19-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.
Reynaldo Diovanis Hinojosa Mayan, 48, was identified as the driver of the Jeep. Officials noted that he sustained minor injuries and exhibited signs of intoxication.
Officers indicated that the results of the field sobriety tests were indicative of intoxication, and his breath sample indicated a Blood Alcohol Content exceeding twice the legal limit.
Mayan is currently facing two counts of DUI Manslaughter and DUI charges. Investigators are in consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to ascertain whether further charges will be filed.
