Maria Pike,Destinii Hope Obituary, Death; – Authorities have disclosed the identities of a woman and her infant who tragically lost their lives last week in an incident that culminated in a shooting involving the police in Independence, Missouri.

Captain Kyle Flowers of the Blue Springs Police Department confirmed that Maria Pike, aged 34, and her two-month-old daughter, Destinii Hope, were both fatally injured during the occurrence at Oval Spring Apartments.

Captain Flowers is leading the Eastern Jackson County Police Incident Investigation Team (PIIT), which is conducting an inquiry into the event that involved several officers from Independence.

On Tuesday, Flowers provided an update regarding the investigation, stating that the PIIT has reviewed the body-worn camera footage documenting the incident, and investigators are set to re-interview individuals involved that same day.

The current objective is to submit findings from the investigation to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office by next week, although no specific timeline has been established for the case.

On Monday, the grandmother of the child, Talisa Coombs, expressed her belief that the shooting was entirely preventable. Coombs recounted that she had gone to check on Destinii and her son, the child’s father, on Thursday at the request of Child Protective Services.

Upon her arrival at the apartment, Coombs alleged that she was assaulted by Pike. “She struck me on my forehead, resulting in a significant bruise,” Coombs stated, displaying a bruise on her upper chest.

Following the incident, Coombs contacted 911, expressing her desire to file charges upon the arrival of the police, after which she was transported to the hospital.

A property manager at the apartment complex reportedly persuaded the child’s father to allow police officers entry into the apartment, where they attempted to convince him to remove the baby from Pike’s custody.

Shortly thereafter, gunfire was heard.

In the aftermath of the shooting, police reported that Pike was in possession of a knife during the incident, and of the three officers present in the apartment at that time, one discharged his weapon.

Coombs remarked that regardless of Pike’s mental condition, she could not comprehend the actions of the officers involved.
