Jeffery Carter Obituary, Death; – Two individuals were apprehended on Monday following the fatal shooting of a bystander in the front yard of his residence in Gaston County several months prior.

Records indicate that Keith McClure, aged 22, and Jasmionta Mackey, aged 21, were denied bail and charged with first-degree murder.

The victim, identified as Jeffery Carter, was a 40-year-old resident of Gastonia. The tragic incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at a property located on Hawkins Street near Proctor Street in Gastonia.

According to officers, they responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity and discovered Carter suffering from a gunshot wound. Following an investigation, law enforcement concluded that Carter was an innocent bystander who was killed in the front yard of his own home.

“This was a tragic and senseless loss of life,” stated Assistant Police Chief Nancy Brogdon. Mr. Carter had no connection to the altercation that precipitated this shooting. He was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. Carter was reportedly positioned several houses away from a nearby gathering where a dispute escalated into gunfire.

Police reports suggest that Mackey and McClure were associated with an “incident” that took place on Friday, April 18, at Legends, just hours before the fatal shooting. Legends is situated on West Main Avenue, approximately 10 minutes from Hawkins Street.

While the specifics of that incident remain unclear, detectives are urging the public to provide any information regarding the events of the night of the shooting.
