Javion Magee Obituary, Death; – An investigation is currently in progress following the discovery of a deceased man near Henderson, who was found with a rope around his neck.
At approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday, deputies from the Vance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a location on Vanco Mill Road. The victim, identified as 21-year-old Javion Magee from Illinois, was located outside a fenced area at the base of a tree, seated with a rope encircling his neck, with the other end secured to the tree.
Candice Matthews, a family spokesperson, informed WRAL News that Magee was employed as a delivery truck driver and was a graduate of Longview High School in Texas.
Matthews expressed the family’s belief that Magee’s death constitutes a hate crime. “In my view, it is a hate crime because this young man showed no signs of suicidal thoughts,” she stated.
During a news conference on Friday, Vance County Sheriff Curtis R. Brame revealed that evidence indicates Magee had purchased a rope from a Walmart, where he had made a stop for a delivery prior to his death. The sheriff’s office is currently working to establish a timeline leading up to Magee’s death by utilizing GPS data from his delivery vehicle.
Sheriff Brame did not provide any information regarding a suspect, noting that the cause of Magee’s death remains undetermined. A death investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday at the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The sheriff’s office has requested assistance from the District Attorney’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation in this matter.
Brame extended his condolences to the family and urged both the family and the public to be patient as the “necessary evidence” is gathered. “We have many questions and not enough answers,” Matthews remarked. “This situation does not seem logical at all… We seek to understand everything related to the investigative process. We demand full transparency.” Individuals with any information are encouraged to reach out to the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at 252-738-2200 or contact Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.
