Javeon Dukes Obituary, Death; – Seven individuals were shot, with one fatality reported in LaGrange early Sunday morning, according to police reports.
A statement from the LaGrange Police Department indicated that the shooting took place at a location on Seminary Street. This location is a residential area situated across from the parking lot of a funeral home, and the exact site of the shooting remains unclear.
The complete details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting are also not fully understood. Police reported that officers responded to gunfire reports around 1 a.m. The LaGrange PD identified the deceased victim as 19-year-old Javeon Dukes.
“Emergency medical services were quickly dispatched, and all victims were taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment,” the police statement noted, adding that Dukes was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. “The current medical conditions of the other victims vary; some have been treated and released, while others are still receiving care.” A cousin of Dukes, Chant Dukes, characterized the incident as a “shoot out” that occurred during a backyard party, based on her understanding of the situation.
“They fired into a crowd of children,” she remarked. “It makes no sense. It is absurd.” A neighbor also recounted hearing the gunfire when the shooting commenced and woke her cousin to evacuate the house.
“I told my cousin, ‘Get up, girl — the bullets are flying.’ I heard shouting all around. I thought, ‘They are going to come back and shoot up my house,'” the neighbor stated. The LaGrange department mentioned that its Criminal Investigations Division is in charge of the ongoing inquiry. No suspects have been named.
