On October 25, a passerby alerted a nearby deputy to the incident occurring at a Shell station in Washington, according to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, who spoke to the Clarion-Ledger.
Upon arrival at approximately 7:20 p.m., the deputy discovered the alleged shooter, whose identity has not been disclosed, seated by the gas pumps, as detailed by the Vicksburg Daily News, referencing a statement from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials detained the individual and confiscated a semiautomatic firearm, the report indicated. The deceased victim, identified as James Keating, was found inside the station, lying lifeless on the floor, according to authorities.

Investigators determined that a verbal altercation ensued when Keating, who was purchasing drinks, accidentally knocked over a cup of ice placed by the other man, as reported by WAPT.
During the dispute, the man suggested he possessed a firearm, although he did not display or aim it at Keating, as stated by Patten. Subsequently, Keating exited the store, returned with a gun, and confronted the man.
“The confrontation escalated into physical violence when Keating attacked the shooter, who then shot Keating multiple times in response,” Patten explained in the news release, as reported by WAPT. He noted that investigators have gathered evidence from the scene and that witnesses have been forthcoming, including the accused shooter, according to the Clarion-Ledger. “This appears to be a senseless act of violence that will forever alter the lives of two families,” Patten remarked, as cited by the newspaper.
