Jack Davey Obituary, Death; – Photos released by the family less than a day following his passing depict the Auburn South student beaming in his school uniform while cradling a puppy. He sustained critical injuries and succumbed to them en route to the hospital after a vehicle crashed through a fence and into a schoolyard yesterday afternoon, colliding with a group of children seated at a table.

Jack Davey.

Two 11-year-old girls, along with a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, were seriously injured and transported to the hospital. The driver, a 40-year-old woman, had just picked up her child from the school in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and was attempting a U-turn when the incident occurred.

The mother from Hawthorn East was taken into custody and questioned by detectives. No charges have been filed, and she was released overnight while investigations continue. Neither she nor her child in the vehicle sustained injuries. Auburn South Principal Marcus Wicher remarked on the extraordinary bravery displayed in the aftermath of the incident, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the ongoing well-being of both staff and students.

“This school community is truly remarkable and resilient; together we will overcome this,” Wicher stated to reporters. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the local community, thanking everyone who offered assistance.

“I wish to acknowledge my dedicated staff and the parents who provided comfort to our children yesterday. The courage and compassion shown have been nothing short of extraordinary.” The school remained open today, with additional support services available.

Premier Jacinta Allan, who has a son in fifth grade, shared her visceral reaction upon learning of the accident. “Anyone would have felt the same way,” she remarked. “For those of us who have experienced school drop-offs and pick-ups, this resonates deeply.”

The premier urged those in the broader community who are struggling to take advantage of the available support services. Allan and Education Minister Ben Carroll spoke with the school’s principal last night after he had a conversation with Jack’s mother. “It was an incredibly difficult discussion for the principal,” the premier noted.
