Huynh Huu Duc Nguyen Obituary, Death; – An Elk Grove resident who lost his life in a seven-vehicle collision during a pursuit on Saturday in Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood has been named, and the individual suspected of the chase is now facing charges of manslaughter and hit-and-run.
Huynh Huu Duc Nguyen, aged 30, was declared deceased shortly after 11 a.m. at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive, as reported by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The suspect, 34-year-old Daniel Cunningham, fled from his vehicle following the crash but was apprehended later, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Officers initially received a call around 10:15 a.m. Saturday from a woman seeking to retrieve her belongings from a residence on Farm Dale Way, police stated.
This woman was reportedly a victim of Cunningham’s in a domestic violence incident that occurred on June 1, and she requested police presence while she collected her items.
Records indicated that he was also a parolee at large with an active felony warrant for his arrest, police noted.
Officers allegedly located Cunningham near Farm Dale Way while the woman was present and attempted to stop his vehicle, but he failed to comply.
During the ensuing chase, he reportedly collided with six vehicles while heading west on Florin Road at the intersection with Greenhaven Drive, police reported. This intersection is situated less than a mile from Farm Dale Way.
Nguyen, who was in one of the six vehicles, succumbed to his injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident. Cunningham is facing charges that include manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death or serious permanent injury, evading and obstructing law enforcement, domestic violence, and violation of parole, as per records from the Sacramento County Main Jail.
“His actions endangered not only his own life but the lives of everyone around him,” stated Anthony Gamble, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department. Cunningham is not eligible for bail and is anticipated to appear in Sacramento County Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.
