Darya J. Foster Obituary, Death; – Woman from Merrillville lost her life in a collision on Interstate 80 in Gary early Saturday morning, following an incident involving a box truck, as reported by law enforcement officials.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. on September 7, when two vehicles collided eastbound on I-80, specifically near the 8.4-mile marker, situated between Burr Street and Grant Street in Gary, according to a statement from the Lowell Post of the Indiana State Police.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a silver Hyundai Santa Fe struck the rear of a white Lazy Boy box truck in the right center lane. Initial assessments suggest that the Hyundai was traveling at a significantly high speed at the moment of impact with the box truck, according to police reports.
Following the collision, the box truck lost control, crashing into the center median wall and subsequently knocking down a light pole. The truck then traversed all lanes of traffic before coming to rest in the right ditch. After the initial collision, the driver of the Hyundai was ejected from the vehicle, which continued to travel east for approximately a quarter of a mile before coming to an uncontrolled halt, as stated by police.
The driver of the Hyundai was ejected and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries at the scene. She has been identified as Darya J. Foster, 25, from Merrillville, Indiana.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has notified her family, as confirmed by police. The driver and passenger of the box truck were taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to the extensive nature of the crash scene, the roadway was intermittently closed for several hours to facilitate crash reconstruction and clean-up efforts.
