Barton Andrew Weitzel Obituary, Death; – A Waynesboro resident tragically lost his life on Monday morning due to a collision involving a deer and a pickup truck on Highway 23, as reported by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident took place at approximately 6:27 a.m. between Jack Delaigle Road and Hancock Landing Road, when a large deer entered the road from the southern shoulder and collided with a westbound motorcycle.

According to deputies, the collision caused the motorcycle’s operator, identified as Barton Andrew Weitzel, 59, to lose control and be thrown onto the roadway. Subsequently, Weitzel was struck by a pickup truck that was also traveling westbound. Authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck, Kirk Brigham, 60, from Girard, did not sustain any injuries.

In a statement, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences to Weitzel’s family and friends, describing it as “a difficult time” for the community.

The incident is currently under investigation by the agency’s Traffic Division.
