Antonio Rosales Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified the individual who was shot by police in Escondido on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, the San Diego Police Department named 34-year-old Antonio Rosales as the suspect involved in the incident. He is currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds at a hospital in North County.

The situation unfolded after Escondido police received a report of a man wielding a firearm at the transit center located at 700 W. Valley Parkway around 7:38 p.m. Wednesday, as stated by SDPD. Upon arrival, officers attempted to engage with the individual, who fled eastward across Quince Street onto a bike path, prompting a foot pursuit by the officers.

An officer instructed the suspect to halt and relinquish the items he was holding, according to SDPD. After running approximately one hundred feet down the bike path, the suspect abruptly turned towards the officer, brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, which led the Escondido officer to discharge his service weapon multiple times.

Police reported that the suspect, now identified as Rosales, suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is anticipated to recover from his injuries. Officers provided assistance at the scene until paramedics transported him to the hospital. A BB gun resembling a revolver was discovered near the location where the suspect fell, as noted by SDPD.

The officer involved has been with the Escondido Police Department for around three years and is assigned to patrol duties. SDPD confirmed that the officer was equipped with a body camera during the pursuit and subsequent shooting.

Rosales has been arrested on charges of brandishing a weapon in the presence of an officer and resisting arrest, according to police. Detectives are working in conjunction with the District Attorney’s office to explore the possibility of conducting an arraignment at the hospital due to his injuries.

Following the countywide memorandum of understanding regarding officer-involved shootings, SDPD detectives have been called to conduct an investigation. The District Attorney’s office will review the investigation to assess whether the involved officer may face any criminal liability for his actions.
