Adrian Daulby,Melvin Cravitz Obituary, Death; – Two individuals lost their lives in Manchester, England, on Yom Kippur when a man drove his vehicle into a group of Jewish worshipers outside an Orthodox synagogue, subsequently exiting the car to stab several people.

Authorities in England have classified the event as a terrorist act. They identified the assailant as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen born in Syria.

A police officer fatally shot Al-Shamie at the scene approximately seven minutes after the assault commenced. Investigations later revealed that the explosives belt he was wearing was not real.

The two deceased individuals at the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue were recognized as Adrian Daulby, aged 53, and Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, both of whom were part of the local Jewish community. Three additional individuals remain in critical condition.

It was disclosed by police on Friday that one of the deceased and one of the injured had been shot by officers while taking cover behind the synagogue’s door to prevent Al-Shamie from gaining entry. Authorities had previously stated that a member’s prompt action to secure the synagogue’s doors and alert the police was instrumental in thwarting the attacker’s entry into the building.

“We express our gratitude to the member of the public whose swift response to the situation enabled our rapid intervention,” Greater Manchester Police stated in a release on Thursday.

The assault reverberated with profound shock throughout the British Jewish community on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Some Orthodox Jews, including those in Manchester, were unaware of the attack until after the holiday concluded at sundown.

“This is the day we hoped would never arrive, yet deep down, we anticipated it would,” tweeted Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis after the holiday had ended.

English Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose spouse is Jewish, departed from a European Summit meeting in Copenhagen to return to London for an emergency response gathering.

“The occurrence of this incident on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, renders it even more appalling,” Starmer expressed on X. “My thoughts are with the families of all those impacted, and I extend my gratitude to the emergency services.”
