Douglas Dietz Obituary, Death; – Devastating news has emerged from Pennsylvania, where an 11-year-old boy may now face incarceration after allegedly shooting and killing his father following a dispute over a Nintendo Switch. The ‘House that Mario Built’ maintains a family-friendly reputation, having produced some of the most successful gaming franchises in history, including Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon, all of which fall under its umbrella.
After years of speculation, rumors, and leaks, the year 2025 finally marked the release of the Switch 2. Despite its delayed launch, Nintendo managed to compete effectively with the long-standing PS5, emerging as one of the best-selling consoles of the year.
There was widespread demand for a Switch 2, and with the gaming giant implementing a clever strategy to combat scalping, it appears that many were able to acquire Nintendo’s next generation of gaming.
According to reports from Pennsylvania’s WGAL News 8, court documents detail an alleged incident on January 13, during which police were called to a residence in Duncannon Borough and arrested an 11-year-old boy.
Officers arrived at the location around 3:20 am, responding to a report of an “unresponsive male.” This individual was identified as 42-year-old Douglas Dietz, who was discovered deceased in his bed with a gunshot wound to the head. The incident reportedly took place on the boy’s birthday, with the outlet stating that he entered the bedroom exclaiming, “Daddy’s dead.”
Troopers also reportedly overheard the young suspect telling his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
The deceased is said to have shared the bedroom with his wife, which was connected to his son’s room through a closet.
There is a specific reference to the Nintendo Switch, indicating that the shooting occurred after Dietz had taken the handheld console away from his son.
Dietz’s wife stated that she was asleep but was awakened by a loud noise and a smell reminiscent of fireworks. After nudging her husband, she realized he was unresponsive. Hearing what she initially thought was dripping water, the court documents reveal that she turned on the light and discovered it was her husband’s blood.
The boy told local authorities that he’d had a ‘good day’ with his parents, although documents refer to him becoming “mad” when Douglas Dietz told him to go to bed.
The outlet cites an affidavit where the boy said, “I shot somebody.” The sworn police statement added: “He admitted that he had someone in mind whom he was going to shoot, whom he identified as his father.”
Dietz’s wife says there was a gun safe in the room, although she claims she didn’t know where the key was. It’s reported that the 11-year-old found the safe key in a drawer when looking for his Nintendo Switch.
He then admitted to “removing the gun from the safe, loading bullets into it and walking over to his father’s side of the bed.”
The affidavit concluded: “He pulled back the hammer and fired the gun at his father.”
When asked what he thought would happen, investigators stated that the boy “was mad, and he had not thought about that.”
With the boy being taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide, he’s been denied bail and is being held at the Perry County Prison ahead of a January 22 hearing.
