Desiree Jaclyn Browning,Soonhoon Choi Obituary, Death; – A 25-year-old Athens woman and her unborn child, who were critically injured in a crash Sunday on the Athens Perimeter, died early Wednesday, Athens-Clarke police announced.

Sara Alexis Waldroup and her child had been hospitalized in critical condition since the wreck early Sunday that killed her husband, 25-year-old Soonhoon Choi.

The wreck was caused by a motorist in a Kia Seltos traveling in the wrong lane at a high rate of speed on the Athens Perimeter near the Oglethorpe Avenue intersection.

The Kia driver, Desiree Jaclyn Browning, 26, of Lawrenceville, was killed at the scene, and her passenger, Katilyn Mills, 24, of Athens, was ejected and hospitalized in serious condition.

The Kia also hit two other vehicles, but four people in those vehicles escaped serious injury, according to the police report.

On the eve of Christmas, the family issued a statement about the loss of the young woman, who was placed in a medically induced coma as physicians tried to save her life and that of her child at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

“She fought with everything she had — with courage, strength, and love — and her passing has left an ache that cannot be described,” noted the family. “What began as hope and prayer has turned into unimaginable heartbreak.

“The family is working to arrange Lexi’s services and is hoping to have her laid to rest alongside her husband, Soonhoon, so they may be together forever. We want to thank every single person who prayed, shared, donated, and sent words of encouragement. The outpouring of love carried this family through the darkest moments, and that love will never be forgotten.”

The family had set up a GoFundMe account to help defray to cost of Waldroup’s care. Those donations now will go toward medical expenses and their burial.
