Mary Edwards Obituary, Death; – A woman who lost her life in a rush-hour accident near a significant highway interchange in Centre County was identified on Thursday as a resident of Bedford County. Mary Edwards, 74, from Saxton, passed away on Friday due to the crash that occurred on the 1400 block of Jacksonville Road in Spring Township, as stated by Centre County Deputy Coroner Jason Brooks in a press release.
An autopsy performed on Saturday revealed that Edwards succumbed to blunt force chest trauma. The Centre County Coroner’s Office classified her death as accidental. According to Spring Township police in a Facebook post, the driver of a Ford F-350 towing a camper was heading southbound around 5:05 p.m. on Friday when they collided with a Jaguar station wagon that made a left turn in front of them.
Edwards, who was a passenger in the Jaguar, died at the scene. The driver of the station wagon received treatment for moderate injuries at Mount Nittany Medical Center. The driver of the heavy-duty pickup truck was unharmed. The cause of the accident, which took place shortly after sunset and during rainfall, is still under investigation.
At least one lane of Interstates 80 and 99 was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours on Friday evening. A $259 million initiative to create a direct, high-speed link between I-80 and I-99 is currently in progress. The construction of high-speed ramps aims to eliminate the necessity of traveling along state Route 26 to access either highway, with completion anticipated by 2030. Over the past decade, there have been eight fatal accidents in Spring Township, according to available PennDOT statistics, which ranks it tied for the fourth highest number of fatalities among municipalities in Centre County, following Rush, Walker, and Potter townships.
