Andrew Connors,Colin McLaughlin Obituary, Death;- Three individuals have lost their lives following a plane crash in Australia.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, October 11, emergency services responded to reports of an aircraft accident at Shellharbour Airport in Albion Park Rail, Shellharbour, as stated by the New South Wales Police in a news release.
“Emergency services are presently on the scene of a fatal aircraft crash in the Lake Illawarra region of the state,” police reported. “Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District have been notified that a light aircraft crashed shortly after take-off.”
“Upon impact with the ground, the aircraft ignited, and the fire was extinguished by the Rural Fire Service,” police further noted.
Three individuals perished at the site of the incident. The deceased have been identified as Andrew Connors, 55, his spouse Julianne, 54, and their acquaintance Colin McLaughlin, 73, according to reports from News.com.au and The Daily Telegraph. Andrew and Julianne were the operators of the local business Connors Building and are survived by their two children.
No additional injuries have been reported in connection with the incident, as per NSW police.
The couple and McLaughlin arrived at Shellharbour Airport around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Following take-off, the aircraft rapidly lost altitude and nosedived onto the runway, as reported by 9News and News.com.au.
“The plane had taken off from the tarmac and ascended approximately 30 meters into the air. At that moment, witnesses indicated that the aircraft dipped, with its left wing descending and making contact with the tarmac,” stated Lake Illawarra Police District Inspector Wunderlich, according to News.com.au. “Regrettably, the plane was engulfed in flames.”

“I would like to express my gratitude to the emergency response teams… for their efforts in what was truly a challenging incident,” he continued, characterizing the event as a “gruesome scene.”
“They performed exceptionally well in what was undeniably a horrific situation,” Wunderlich concluded, as reported by 9 News.
According to the flight-tracking platform Flight Radar 24, the single-engine Piper Cherokee aircraft had taken off for Bathurst, with an estimated flight duration of 40 minutes. However,
“There was nothing anybody could have done for the occupants of the airplane,” said Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Andrew Barber, per 9 News. “It did disintegrate upon impact with the ground, one wing came off completely.”
A crime scene has been established at the scene and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) were notified, per the police release.
An ATSB spokesperson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, “Investigators will conduct a range of evidence-gathering activities, including site survey with a drone, wreckage examination, and recovery of any aircraft components for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra.”
“Investigators will also seek to interview involved parties and witnesses, and collect relevant recorded information, including flight tracking data, pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.” New South Wales Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
