Grace Bustos Obituary, Death; – A 28-year-old Glen Carbon man was charged Monday with two counts of DUI in the fatal vehicle crash that killed a 17-year-old Alton girl on Friday.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:05 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Homer Adams Parkway and Seminary Road in Alton.

Zachary A. Shewmake, 28, of Glen Carbon, was charged Oct. 6 with aggravated driving while under the influence, an enhanced Class 2 felony; and aggravated driving while under the influence, a Class 4 felony.

The Alton Police Department presented the case.

According to court documents, on Oct. 3, Shewmake was allegedly driving a Ford Focus on Homer Adams Parkway in Alton while under the influence of alcohol when he collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Grace Bustos.

Her mother was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital, where she was reported in stable condition as of Saturday. Shewmake was ordered remanded to jail.

According to a petition to deny pre-trial release filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, police responded to the crash and identified Shewmake as the driver of a vehicle that ran a red light, striking Bustos’ vehicle.

Officers found open beer in Shewmake’s vehicle, and he “smelled strongly of intoxicants and performed poorly on (standard field sobriety tests).”
