Ashley Smylie Obituary, Death; – The trial for the teenager from Rankin County, who is charged with the murder of her mother, is set to commence on Monday, September 16, with the selection of the jury.
Earlier this week, the court rejected a motion to transfer Carly Gregg’s case to Youth Court. The prosecution argued that Gregg cannot assert an insanity defense due to voluntary intoxication, noting her admission of marijuana use just days prior to her mother’s death.
During a court session in August, Gregg declined a plea agreement that would have resulted in a 40-year sentence under the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). Consequently, the case will proceed to trial, where Gregg faces the possibility of a life sentence.
A grand jury had previously indicted Gregg on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence. The incident occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, in the 200 block of Ashton Way.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He informed the deputies that he had returned home to find his wife, identified as 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. He alleged that his 14-year-old stepdaughter was in possession of a firearm.
According to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, the victim reported that Gregg shot him in the shoulder. The man managed to disarm the teenager, who subsequently fled into the backyard and scaled a fence.
