Jose Carcamo Obituary, Death; – D.C. police are currently investigating a series of shootings that have occurred in the District over the past week, including one incident that took place early Tuesday morning in the Logan Circle area.

According to DC police, a young woman and her neighbor on Pitts Place Southeast engaged in some form of argument, and surveillance footage captured the young woman being pursued by two individuals before being shot.

The Metropolitan Police Department has announced the arrest of two men as suspects in this case. MPD has cordoned off the victim’s residence as well as another nearby home as they work to gather evidence.

“We must find better ways to resolve conflicts than the current methods we are employing,” stated MPD Chief Pamela Smith. “Using firearms to settle disputes is simply not the appropriate approach.” The shooting on Tuesday marks the most recent incident in a troubling pattern of violence within the District.

Other victims include a man who was fatally struck by a stray bullet that entered his apartment in Columbia Heights, a former elected ANC commissioner who was injured in a triple shooting in Congress Heights, and two teenage boys who lost their lives in another triple shooting in Washington Highlands.

“We are losing lives,” Smith remarked. “These individuals are dying over issues that we firmly believe could be resolved through dialogue.” Data from D.C. police indicates that there have been 13 fatal shootings in the last two weeks, resulting in 15 fatalities.

Many of these cases remain unsolved, including the incident involving the stray bullet. The victim, Jose Carcamo, was enjoying a visit from his mother for Mother’s Day when she rushed in upon hearing gunfire, only to discover that her son had been shot in the head, as she recounted to News4 partner T44. Additionally, early Tuesday morning, another man was discovered shot and killed on 14th Street.

Some residents expressed their frustration to News4 regarding the ongoing criminal activity. “It’s just heartbreaking,” said local resident Mary Jackson. “All I can do is pray for them. I just hope for improvements in the situation.”

One man said he didn’t want to be identified, but said he arrives to work on 14th street in the dark hours of the morning, and he often feels unsafe. In the meantime, MPD says it plans to investigate every case as 15 families are now left to grieve loved ones lost to gun violence.

Police say they’re planning to return to the neighborhood in the coming days with violence interrupters and other resources to try to form connections with people and help resolve conflicts before they turn violent.
