Samuel Riveros Obituary, Death; – A Dodgers cap, jersey, and pennant were among the items left by mourners over the weekend at a memorial outside the Baldwin Park Police Department, honoring a 35-year-old officer who was shot and killed while on duty.

Residents and colleagues gathered at the memorial for Officer Samuel Riveros, which features a patrol car, flowers, photographs, candles, and items that showcase his passion for the Dodgers. Blue and white flowers adorned the hood of the patrol car.
“Our officer was an incredible man,” stated Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez. “He was an enthusiastic snowboarder and a devoted Dodger fan. One interesting fact I discovered is that he would travel to see the Dodgers play at stadiums across the United States.”

The nine-year veteran of the department was fatally shot while responding around 7 p.m. Saturday to the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue, just a few blocks east of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, following a report of a man armed with a rifle, as reported by the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

A man with a gunshot wound was discovered at the scene and was pronounced dead there. Information regarding the identity of that man and the circumstances leading to the shooting was not immediately available.

Security cameras captured the sound of multiple gunshots as officers arrived on the scene. Riveros and another officer were shot during the incident and both were taken to a hospital, where Riveros succumbed to his injuries. The name of the suspect has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear what charges he may face. Riveros was a member of the SWAT team and was appointed as a Field Training Officer the previous year.

“To know that this occurred so close to home and to not pay tribute to a fallen officer, regardless of personal opinions or familiarity, is irrelevant,” remarked resident Gustavos Tanahara, who visited the memorial. “It’s about honoring a human being, a police officer.” The other officer received treatment and was released from the hospital, according to city officials.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting is encouraged to contact the LASD’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous are also welcome to reach out.
