Richard Grande Obituary, Death; – The individual who was fatally shot by police in a shopping area of Glenwood Springs on Monday has been named.
The Garfield County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as Richard Grande, aged 55. A news release indicated that Grande was known to reside in his vehicle in and around the Glenwood Springs vicinity.
Investigators from the coroner’s office arrived at the Glenwood Meadows Shopping Center at approximately 2:23 p.m. and declared Grande deceased at 2:33 p.m. An autopsy conducted by the coroner’s office’s contracted forensic pathologist on Wednesday revealed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Prior to the incident, Glenwood Springs Police approached Grande at the shopping complex shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday regarding a felony warrant connected to weapons charges.
“As the officers engaged with the individual, he promptly brandished a firearm. Both officers withdrew, and one officer discharged his service weapon,” the department detailed in a press release. “As the suspect advanced towards his vehicle, the officers repositioned themselves and again opened fire on the suspect.”
According to the release, only one of the two officers discharged their weapon at the individual.
The officer involved in the shooting, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been placed on administrative leave. The Glenwood Springs Police Department is undertaking an internal investigation into the incident, while the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a separate inquiry into the use of force for potential criminal charges.
