Ramon Diaz-Soria Obituary, Death; – Authorities retrieved the body of a 27-year-old man who leaped into Lake Lanier in Georgia over the weekend and did not resurface.
In a communication to PEOPLE, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) indicated that its game wardens were alerted on the afternoon of Saturday, June 14, regarding a drowning incident in a residential cove located just north of Vann’s Tavern Park on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County. As reported by the DNR, witnesses stated that the individual, later identified as Ramon Diaz-Soria, jumped into the water when the boat he was on came to a halt.
“He was wearing a life jacket, but it was not properly fastened,” the DNR noted. “Once he entered the water, he went under and did not resurface, leaving his life jacket floating on the surface.” The search for Diaz-Soria was halted after nightfall on Saturday and resumed the following morning, Sunday, June 15. Game wardens employed sonar technology to locate Diaz-Soria, whose body was discovered in 60 feet of water on Sunday evening.
In a report concerning the drowning and water-related death provided to PEOPLE, the DNR stated that Diaz-Soria was unable to swim, as confirmed by the victim’s family and friends. Before his disappearance, Diaz-Soria was aboard a boat with others to celebrate a friend’s birthday, according to ABC affiliate WSB and Fox affiliate WAGA.
The victim’s sister, Abigail Diaz-Soria, mentioned that her brother’s friends In a GoFundMe, Abigail remembered her brother and described his death as a shock to their family.
“Ramon was everything to me,” she wrote in the fundraiser description.”He wasn’t just my brother—he was my best friend, my protector, and my biggest supporter. Anyone who knew him would tell you how kind, generous, funny, and full of light he was. He was always looking out for others, always ready to lend a helping hand. Helping people wasn’t just something he did—it’s who he was.”
“This loss is truly beyond words,” Abigail continued. “While nothing can ever fill the void he’s left behind, we want to honor Ramon in the way he deserves. Any support during this incredibly difficult time—whether it’s a donation, a message, or a prayer—means the world to us.”
Melanie Meza, a friend of the family, described Diaz-Soria to WSB as a go-getter, adding, “He amazed me, how he did everything. And right now it is such a big toll on his sister.” The Georgia DNR said that Diaz-Soria’s body was released to the coroner following the recovery.
