A 29-year-old man from Colorado was fatally struck by lightning shortly before 12:30 p.m. on June 20 while he was standing in ankle-deep water in New Smyrna Beach, as reported by Tamra Malphurs, a spokesperson for Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, in an email to USA TODAY.

In one horrifying moment, everything changed,” Chitwood wrote. “I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who acted swiftly to provide assistance and transport him to the hospital for a chance at survival.”
