Constable Jennifer Chavis Obituary, Death; – Adolfo Serrano, who was charged with the murder of Harris County Precinct 7 Deputy Constable Jennifer Chavis in 2022, was convicted of intoxication manslaughter on Thursday.
Officials reported that Serrano was attempting to escape from the scene of a prior accident. Witnesses began to follow his vehicle and alerted law enforcement. Deputy Chavis responded to the emergency call and positioned her patrol SUV on the roadway to await Serrano’s arrival. While she was stationed on the highway, Serrano allegedly collided with the rear of her vehicle using his F-550 truck. The impact caused Chavis’ SUV to burst into flames, and she was unable to escape.
She was declared dead at the scene, while Serrano was transported to a hospital.
Prosecutors indicated that Serrano exhibited signs of intoxication, including red eyes and slurred speech, during his hospital stay. He reportedly confessed to consuming a margarita and to hitting Chavis’ vehicle.
It was disclosed that Serrano was operating a work truck belonging to an oil field services company. Court records reveal that Serrano has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2004, with offenses recorded across several Texas counties. His arrests include charges for driving without a valid license, burglary, assault causing bodily injury to a family member, DWI with a child under 15, and possession of marijuana.
Serrano has faced previous arrests in Harris County, Sugar Land, Richmond, and West Columbia. His sentencing is scheduled to commence at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. In Texas, a conviction for intoxication manslaughter carries a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life imprisonment.
