Carlos Ortiz Obituary, Death; – A 45-year-old man was fatally shot after ambushing a security guard at a Hudson Valley hospital with a knife in the emergency room lobby, according to authorities.
Police in Newburgh reported that they were summoned to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital late Thursday following a report of a gunshot.
As per their investigation, the man, identified as Carlos Ortiz, was acting disorderly in the lobby and had activated the fire alarm. Hospital security personnel confronted him, at which point police state he brandished a knife and attacked one of the guards. The guard discharged a single round at Ortiz.
Ortiz, a resident of Newburgh, was subsequently declared dead. It remains unclear whether he had any prior interactions with the hospital before Thursday night.
A woman who was in proximity to the incident also sustained injuries, which authorities describe as non-life-threatening.
Currently, no charges have been filed. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
