Corporal Elio Diaz Obituary, Death; – A deputy from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot during a traffic stop over the weekend, according to officials.
Corporal Elio Diaz was performing a traffic stop at a gas station located on Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte on Sunday afternoon when the driver brandished a rifle and opened fire, as stated by Sheriff Bill Prummell during a press briefing. Diaz was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Mostyn Jr., fled the scene but was subsequently found at a Popeyes restaurant approximately 20 minutes later, as reported by FOX 4. When deputies approached him, authorities indicated that he once again reached for the rifle, which led a deputy to discharge his weapon, fatally wounding Mostyn.
Sheriff Prummell expressed deep sorrow while addressing the media regarding this tragic event. “Elio was a friend,” Prummell remarked, visibly emotional. “He was a devoted family man, cherished his children, and was an exemplary officer.”
