Paul Surgen Obituary, Death; – A pedestrian who tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in the Big Y parking lot on North King Street has been identified by the Northwestern district attorney’s office as Paul Surgen, a resident of Florence.
Surgen succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident, which took place around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Investigators report that he was walking with his back to the vehicle on the roadway adjacent to the sidewalk when he was hit by a car traveling in front of the grocery store.
The driver, a 61-year-old woman from Northampton, remained at the scene of the accident. In accordance with state law regarding motor vehicle fatalities under investigation, her license was promptly suspended, as confirmed by the district attorney’s office.
At the age of 77, Surgen had dedicated 35 years to the postal service and is survived by one brother, four children, and two grandchildren. His obituary highlights his pride in being an Army veteran, as he frequently devoted his time and resources to assist fellow veterans. In addition to his postal service career, Surgen was actively involved in the community as a local baseball and softball coach, having played baseball during his youth at Northampton High School.
“Paul was more than just a coach and mentor; he was a respected and influential figure within the community,” his obituary states. “Renowned for his strength, wisdom, and generosity, he was a trusted friend and a role model to all who encountered him.” A funeral service for Surgen is set to take place on December 3.
The circumstances surrounding the fatality are still under investigation by the Northampton police, State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office, as well as state troopers from the Crime Scene Services Section and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
